Vice on Showtime

Overview

VICE Media built its reputation on a specific promise: go where other outlets won't, tell the stories mainstream media isn't telling, through correspondents embedded in the story. Six seasons on HBO softened that identity. The move to Showtime was the opportunity to restore it.

VICE Media brought the journalism and the infrastructure to the partnership. Showtime brought the platform and a deliberate ambition: a programming slate aimed at a younger, more diverse subscriber base — late-night, scripted comedy, combat sports, and at the center of it, Vice. The journalism anchor. The show that gave the entire slate editorial credibility.

The creative mandate was clear: restore the editorial identity the journalism deserved, and make it the face of a network that was changing who it was for.

Strategy

Three problems. One campaign.

Attribution confusion — eighty percent of HBO subscribers already had Showtime, and most had no reason to look for Vice there. Audience tension — Showtime's news viewers skewed older and linear, while Vice's viewers were younger and more activist. And the most important: differentiation. Vice was not breaking news. It was journalism that goes ahead of the curve, into places mainstream media won't follow.

"Truth Be Told" answered all three. Not a declaration — a position. The phrase holds both meanings at once: the idiom for candor and the mandate to deliver it regardless of the consequences. Most news programming reports the truth. Vice goes to find it.

The design followed the same conviction. Reflect what the show does. Don't decorate it. The visual system was built to carry the same kinetic energy across print and motion from the start — one unified language on every surface.

Success

The identity landed. Vice found a clear home on Showtime — visually aligned with VICE Media's editorial mission, distinct from everything else on the network.

Season 1 earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special. A 2021 Peabody Award. A 2021 Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award for excellence in journalism.

The creative work here spans the first two seasons. Vice became the anchor for Showtime's current events programming — and held that position across multiple renewals and one of the most significant transformations in premium cable history.
